Position summary
This position is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the Offices of Campus Safety, Custodial Services, Grounds, Plant Service, and Transportation. This is done by managing those office supervisors who are responsible for the day-to-day operations. This position also assists the University in strategic planning and risk management.
Qualifications summary
Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant training/certifications.
Relevant work experience in leadership, project management, financial management, and communication/coordination.
Advanced experience/training in either safety/security operations and/or facility management preferred.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
General Duties:

Communicate with campus stakeholders to identify safety and facility needs and delegate outcomes.

Establish/maintain employee development plans.
-
Generate/manage statistical data for report/review.
-
Identify processes and strategies to manage/improve operations, services, and level of care/support for the campus.
-
Manage and/or delegate miscellaneous operations: facility access (keys/card access), policy development, web content, or services provided.
-
Provide guidance in strategic planning/daily operations for individual areas/offices.
-
Provide input/recommendations for all campus process/policies/procedures that impact safety and facilities.
-
Represent individual areas/offices to University Administration for operational needs and campus-wide strategic plans.
-
Serve as alternate building manager for all buildings/facilities/areas on campus.
-
Serve on various assigned committees in varying roles (member, secretary, chair).
-
Where appropriate, coordinate or delegate projects.
-
As needed, assist in day-to-day operations of supervised offices.
-
Other duties as assigned.
Area Specific Duties:

Safety
-
Manage the day-to-day supervisors responsible for administrative functions, operations, regulatory compliance (EPA, NFPA, OSHA), and emergency management.

Serve as incident commander or other roles in the Emergency Operations Center or Incident Command Post.

Facilities
-
Manage the day-to-day supervisors responsible for Custodial Services, Grounds, Plant Service, and Transportation.
-
Serve as or delegate lead roles on construction/remodel projects.
-
Risk Management
-
Advise University Risk Manager on policy/process for risk mitigation.

Supervisory responsibilities
-
Personnel: Manage direct reports and serve as additional level supervisor for their subordinates. This includes involvement in hiring/promotion and any conduct outcomes in consultation with the chain of command and Human Resources. This also includes providing mentorship/development/growth opportunities as well as opportunities to develop/maintain social events/morale.

Financial: Serve as budget manager for individual office budgets and approve purchasing/expense reports.

Investigation/Interrogation (REID, Linguistic Statement Analysis, Title IX, etc.)

Formal law enforcement training (Reserve/LEO Academy etc)
Interpersonal interactions
This position should function with limited direction and be responsible for identifying daily/recurring tasks and any additional training necessary for the completion of their duties.
Internally to the division, this position requires the ability to lead by example and to provide direction/training to subordinates. This requires the intentional fostering of working relationships through trust/credibility and thoughtful decision making.
Externally this position will work with University Administration, campus partners, and vendors/contractors to provide a safe and operational learning environment with services for the campus and public. This requires relationship building and professional comportment.
For security work, it will include providing support to all involved parties while also taking steps to identify those responsible for the incident. This requires developing a unique balance of grace and justice that shows care/support while holding the same person accountable for their actions.
Physical demands
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, jump, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Employee will also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.

Primarily the work environment will be an office setting.
While it is impossible to predict all situations that someone might encounter while performing their duties, it is understood that this position could be expected to work occasionally at all hours of the day and night, during many different types of weather conditions. During these common activities an employee might be confronted with potentially dangerous situations associated with facility and security type work.
In the completion of these activities an employee will also have access to University vehicles, heavy equipment, and other trade-type work settings.
While completing these duties, the employee will be walking through campus grounds including sidewalks, parking lots, roadways, grass areas, and wooded trails. The employee will also be accessing buildings, from common spaces to classrooms, labs, mechanical/electrical rooms, residential spaces, roof-tops, or any other area belonging to the University.
